Info on post-exposure/post bite Rabies vaccine in Brisbane.
January 6th, 2026If you were bitten, scratched or licked by a mammal while overseas – you need Rabies POST exposure vaccination.
Post-exposure rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin are available at no charge in Queensland (however doctors consultation fees may apply)
You do not need to be an australian resident or have a medicare card.
To access the vaccine etc, you need to contact the local PUBLIC HEALTH UNIT where you live, or will be staying, in Queensland. Contact details for Queensland public health units can be found here: Public health units | Queensland Health’
They will ask
- your details : name, date of birth, address, mobile number
- details of your exposure (date it happened, where in the world, animal involved, site on your body that you were bitten etc, and what treatment you have had so far.)
Rabies is a potentially fatal disease, and by the time you get sick with symptoms of rabies, it is too late – rabies will be 100% fatal. This is all rather stressful but the QLD public health system is extremely efficient and will organise everything for you.
