Info on post-exposure/post bite Rabies vaccine in Brisbane.
January 6th, 2026If you were bitten scratched or licked by a mammal while overseas – you need Rabies POST exposure vaccination. This is available at no charge in Queensland. You do not need to be an australian resident or have a medicare card.
You need to call your nearest PUBLIC HEALTH UNIT – your unit depends on where in Brisbane you live or are staying.
If you live on the North side of the Brisbane river you need to call Metro North on 07 36241111. ( After hours 07 3646 1699)
If you live on the South side of the Brisbane river, you need to call Metro South on 07 31564000 ( After hours 07 31764040)
They will ask
- your details : name, date of birth, address, mobile number
- details of your exposure (date it happened, where in the world, animal involved, site on your body that you were bitten etc, and what treatment you have had so far)
Rabies is a potentially fatal disease, and by the time you get sick with rabies symptoms it is too late – rabies will be 100% fatal. This is all ratehr stressful but the QLD public health system is extremely efficient and will organise everything for you.
